Also referred to as the Republic of South Africa, RSA, or SA, South Africa has a total area of over 122,000,000 km², a coastline of almost 2800 km, nine provinces, a population of 45,000, 11 official languages, and over 14,000 plant species which are indigenous to the country.
When it comes to the economy, South Africa ranks in the mid-20s in terms of its place in the world for size of GDP, they are the second largest exporter of fruit, they have the cheapest electricity, the largest producer of macadamia nuts, 80% of the world’s platinum reserves and is one of the top countries in the world for gold production.
It is the only country in the world to have held the Soccer World Cup, the Rugby World Cup, and the Cricket World Cup… they won the Rugby World Cup on two occasions, the first in 1995 when they also hosted the competition, and again in 2007.
Some of the outdoor activities that you can take part in include safaris, whale watching, deep sea diving and the thrill of shark cage diving, fishing, surfing, abseiling and mountain climbing, paragliding, air ballooning, white water rafting, bungee jumping, or maybe just a more sedentary day of bird watching.
Some of the most interesting things to do in South Africa include visiting the Wild Coast on the Eastern Cape, swimming with the colonies of penguins that live on South Africa’s south western coast, take a ride on one of the most luxurious trains in the world with Rovos Rail, or see the country on more sedate transportation….on the back of an elephant.
Or why not take in one of the arts Festivals such as the “Hallo Darling Festival, the “Standard Bank National Arts Festival”, or the “Hogsback Arts Festival”.
Finally, if you can only see one part of South Africa… visit Cape Town, the Kruger National Park, or a take a journey along the “Garden Route” which offers some of the most spectacular scenery in the world.
