The third largest continent in the world is North America. It is made up of 24 countries with over 500 million people and was “discovered” by Christopher Columbus. The two wealthiest nations in North America are the United States and Canada. It covers just under 5% of the planet’s surface and about 16.5% of the total land area … 24.7 million km², and is twice the size of Europe. In the wintertime, North America is joined to Asia across the Bering Sea, if only by ice. It has the largest mountain in the world … Mount Kea (when you take into account the portion of the mountain which is underwater) and the largest freshwater lake in the world … Lake Superior. It’s the only continent which lies completely in the northern hemisphere.
