As an archipelago located in the South Pacific, the Republic of Fiji consists of at least 300 islands. Almost all of its inhabitants reside in two of its main islands. The islands of Fiji are home to several different cultures and races namely the Fijians, Indians, Christians, Hindus and Muslims. As such, it is not surprising to find a number of holidays and occasions which are influenced by one or several groups. One of the most colorful holidays is known as Fiji Day. Celebrated during the 10th of October of each year, it marks a special part of the local history. On this particular day, two events occurred. In 1874, the island was surrendered to the United Kingdom and 96 years later, the islands gained its freedom from the British. This week long celebration is filled with programs and performances surrounding the local Fijian and Indian cultures, the main cultures on the islands. All of the major religions and groups hold ceremonies and rituals on this special day. Travelers will also get to see a number of programs and activities being sponsored for or against the government such as rallies and political speeches.
Although the islands have long gained their independence from the British, the locals continue to celebrate the birthdays of the Queen and Prince of Wales. It is interesting to note that the holiday is celebrated in mid-June although the Queen’s real birthday is on April 21st. This is because of the island’s climate. As the weather during the latter parts of April is prone to changes, the locals have decided to celebrate the holiday later on in the year where the climate is milder.
