Fota Island is a small island which is located in Cork Harbour, Ireland.

The name comes from the Gaelic “Fód te” which means warm soil.

It is home to a wildlife park, Fota house, and a resort and golf course.

The house was originally owned by the landed gentry, eventually it fell into disrepair in the late 20th century, and was reopened in 2002 after full restoration using Irish government, EU, and private funding.

The wildlife park[1] was opened in 1983, in order to conserve global wildlife, by the then president Dr Patrick Hillary.

The animals that live in the wildlife park are for the most part in natural and open surroundings and include antelopes, zebras, giraffes, ostriches, and kangaroos.

There are also predators, such as the cheetah, which are in fenced enclosures obviously in order to prevent them from hunting the other animals.
