I can’t say that I am really into beach holidays, not in the sense of spending my holidays on the beach in any case, I know … there’s plenty of people who are only too willing to do it but I’m just not one of them.
Having said that, when I choose a holiday destination I always tend to choose something that is near the sea, not that I spend much of my time in the sea (too many creepy crawlies!), but there’s just an atmosphere at the seaside, a special feeling that I have when I’m beside the sea that I don’t really get anywhere else, except on top of a mountain maybe, but spending an entire vacation on top of the mountain is not really ever going to be part of my itinerary.
I guess it’s one of those places where all of your senses and can be caressed … the smell and sound of the sea, the smell of food on the promenade, the sound of children laughing, the warm caress of summer sunshine and a silky sea breeze, it always seems like a very healthy place to be.
Several of my friends would spend their entire holiday on a warm Mediterranean beach … no problem whatsoever, I always tend to get bored after 10 minutes and need to move, usually heading up to the local village or town for a wander around.
One of my favourite coastal spots is the town of Guardamar del Segura, on the Costa Blanca … it just has a special mixture of that seaside feeling mixed in with a lovely seaside town offering plenty of opportunities for fun.
I could happily spend my entire vacation wandering along the promenade, sipping the odd carajillo or two, eating seafood, and people watching… which is very important as well, sometimes more entertaining than an engrossing novel.
Even back in Ireland, as soon as the sun comes out people flock to the coast, there’s just something about the sand and the sea…
Ireland’s coastline during the winter months can be quite spectacular with stormy Atlantic surf smashing squarely onto the shore.
