The second largest continent in the world is Africa, covering approximately 6% of the total surface area and accounting for over 20% of the total land area. This population accounts for over 14%. The continent is bordered by the Red Sea and the Suez Canal in the north-east, the Indian Ocean in the south-east, to the north is the Mediterranean Sea, and to the west is the Atlantic ocean. It contains more countries than any other continent and has the longest river in the world … the River Nile. It also has the largest desert in the world … the Sahara, contains the lion’s share of the world’s diamonds and gold, as well as many exotic animal species … including the lion. It is also said to be the birthplace of the human species.
